Mark Nivet releases his new solo CD this weekend. Photo by Richard AmeryThe big show this week is the official CD release party for Mark Nivet, a familiar face with New West Theatre. He releases his CD ‘The Path’ at the Sterndale Bennett Theatre, Jan. 13 with special guest Mike Maguire.
“People know who I am here, and the CD was being sold at the New West show as most people know me from New West, ” Nivet said.

“It’s come together well,” he said his music career isn’t related at all to his work with New West.

“With New West, I’m singing different, really high,  like ‘Eye of the Tiger,’ I wrote the songs for the CD and then picked the key in which to sing them in. Unless you have training , you can’t sing that high for 10 straight songs,” he said adding  the family and friends he has performed the songs  for have responded very positively to them.

He wrote a  lot of the songs  for the CD because of Brad Lang of L.A. Studio Productions who produced his CD and helped him pull everything together including a live DVD performance.

A couple other interesting shows this week include the return of Axis of Conversation to the Slice, Jan. 15. The eclectic collective from Calgary   combine samples, poetry,  several different instruments and assorted strange noises.
As always there are open mics aplenty. Tonight , the Slice has an open mic and Devin Gergel of the Necessities is hosting a new Tuesday night open mic at Cudos Lounge.

Cudos has a couple excellent shows on thwe weekend with Darryl Düus and Friends playing Friday, followed by local indie-pop band Dean Selena and Brenna Lowrie playing on Saturday. The Lethbridge Folk Club also has their  open mic at  the Wolf’s Den this Friday.
