It is all about the roots this week. Local singer songwriter Karen Romanchuk is officially releasing her new CD “Dance,” at the Geomatic Attic, May 7. Techromancer plays Lethbridge, May 4. Photo from http://www.myspace.com/techromancer

She has a lot of special guests on her CD including Shaela Miller, who sings harmony on a song and respected Canadian guitarist Wendell Ferguson  who plays on a couple tracks as well. She also has Bryan Bradfield playing dobro on a track as well as dobro player Jack Loree and stand-up bassist Norm Rook, who all appear on the CD as well as her lead guitarist Pete Watson, who usually accompanies her during live shows. He is also her son Dylan’s guitar teacher.

Her husband Darwin plays drums on the CD and David Popovich plays bass on the Cd. They usually accompany her as well. Most of them will be  at the Attic to play the CD release party.

While Wendell Ferguson won’t be able to make it, neither will Bryan Bradfield, who will be opening for Lynn Miles at the Wolf’s Den, where she is playing for the Lethbridge Folk Club, May 7.

The Ottawa based Miles has recorded seven albums and has won multiple Canadian Folk Music Awards as well as a 2003 Juno Award for Roots and traditional Solo Album of the Year. She has also lived in Los Angeles, Nashville and Austin.

Singer/ songwriters Leslie Alexander and Jenny Allen are also back in Lethbridge, hot on the heels of the release of their new CDs. They will be playing the Tongue n Groove, May 7. The day before that, Okotoks blues/ folk singer- songwriter Darren Johnson returns to Lethbridge to play the Tongue N Groove, May 6.
The music is a departure from the norm for both musicians.
Jenny Allen’s sound is rounded out by stand up bassist Rob Becker and percussionist Pat Stewart as well as John Ellis, who is all over the CD.

For something completely different, the Tongue n Groove will be having a dance party with electo-new wave -pop rock bands Techromancer and Dreamboat, May 4. There is a $10 cover.

Also this weekend, the R and B/ rap star the Game plays the Stone, May 7.

This week, the New Weather Machine will be hosting the Slice’s open jam.

On a sadder note, Cudos Lounge is no longer having live music as of this week. They will be going out with a couple open jams.
The Barefoot Band will send things off in style as they host an open jam, May 6. On May 7, James Clare and Friends will host another open jam

A show coming up early next week, Tuesday, May 10 is very special. It will be a memorial jam held at the Slice in honour of Jimmy Coates, a tireless supporter of live music. Local classic rock band Who’s Yer Daddy will open up the jam at 7:30 p.m. There is no cover.

On another note, local original rock duo Jackson E are looking for a drummer. They play classic rock influenced original rock music. Contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or at 403-327-5406. If you plan ahead, they are playing at Jimmy’s Pub, May 12 at 9 p.m.
