Montreal quartet the Ladies of the Canyon are beautiful and talented.
Thanks to an interview with them advancing their recent show at the Tongue N’ Groove, I’ve become addicted to the haunting harmonies of their new CD “Haunted Women.”
It is easy to become addicted as they drag the listener in right from the opening track and first single “Follow You Down.” And they keep it going. “Maybe Baby,” sounds like a Kim Stockwood song with a similar feel to Shaye’s “Happy Baby.”
Throughout they have an addictive, jangly pop country sound, with harmonies which make them reminiscent of ’80s girl groups like the Go Gos and the Bangles if they played country/ pop music with touch of bluegrass and a smattering of gospel.
One of my favourites is the upbeat ”No Deliverance.”
The vocal harmonies on “Lonely Town,” stand out as well.
They add a few special guests including producer Colin Cripps who plays guitars and mandolin throughout. Luke Doucet adds electric guitar “Follow Me Down,” and Kathleen Edwards adds some extra violin to “Poet.”
But their harmonies stand on their own. These Canadian girls rock it country style. Long live Canadian talent.
