First gig for Coal Creek Boys a hit

E-mail Print PDF

The Coal Creek Boys began their first tour in Lethbridge, July 27. Photo by Richard AmeryThe Owl Acoustic lounge was packed, July 27 for the first gig of a brand new outlaw country band called the Coal Creek Boys who embarked on their first tour of Central and Western B.C. over the long weekend.
The Coal Creek Boys are an amalgamation of popular local pop/punk band Sleeping With Tuesday and local indie pop/ folk band, the Necessities.

Dino Scavo and John Paul Smith, started things off slowly with just mandolin and guitar on a couple slower numbers including a pretty Civil War ballad, then picked up the pace as Devin and Dustin Gergel from the Necessities as well as backup vocalist Ali Stuart for the rest of their fairly upbeat set.

The crowd cheered in appreciation for each song, though I couldn’t hear much of Smith vocals or guitar, but it was clear he knows his country licks as well as he does his pop hooks.

Stuart’s voice was beautiful when it cut through the rest of the sound.

They wound down a solid set of mostly originals with covers of southern rock classic “Can’t You See,” and something that may have been a Waylon Jennings song, though I couldn’t hear the words. I look forward to seeing them develop.
