There is a lot going on this week. The Lethbridge Folk Club features country singer Duane Steele, Oct. 15. The show begins at 8 p.m. Steele, born in Peace Country town of Hines Creek, has been playing professionally since 1984 with the Juno nominated band Rock N’ Horse, which released their debut CD in 1991. His fist solo CD, 1995’s PO Box 423 featured the top 5 singles and number one hit “Anita Got Married.”
He won a national Humanitarian award in 2001 from the Saskatchewan Country Music Association and has received numerous Juno nominations for COuntry Male Vocalist of the year in 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999 and best new solo artist in 1999.
Tickets cost $20 or $25 for non-members, whihc includes a yearly membership. Charlie Ewing will be opening the show.
Elsewhere in the city, Kamloops born folk musician Folk Thief aka David Hadgkiss returns to Lethbridge with My Boy Rascal at the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Oct. 15.
Though he has only been playing for just over a year, he already has a Western Canadian Music Awards nomination for best album design.
The Kamloops raised folk/ pop singer has to fly to Whitehorse the day after his Oct. 15 show with My Boy Rascal at the Owl Acoustic Lounge for the week long celebration of Western Canadian music.
Leslie Alexander and Jenny Allen also return to Lethbridge this week. they return to the Slice, Oct. 13. on their Dirty Laundry Dual Release Tour Event.
The duo have an interesting contrast in styles as Jenny Allen is more country, while Anderson is more in the rock vein a la Sheryl Crow, but they play with each other, adding extra harmony vocals and instrumentation — everything from kazoo to washboard as well as a guitar and mandolin.
Cape Breton based bluesman/ folk musician Matt Andersen spends most of his year on the road, so it makes sense that his latest CD, “Coal Mining Blues,” would have a lot of songs about missing home.
He will be coming back to Lethbridge, Oct. 11 to play the Geomatic Attic.
It has been five or six years since he last played Lethbridge at the Slice. So he will be playing music from the two solo CDs he has released since then as well as plenty from the new CD. Tickets will be available at the door for $32.50. The show begins at 8 p.m.
Musicians Mike Edel and Tyson Mostenbocker met while skiing the Alps in northern Germany, found kindred spirits in each other and decided to tour together. They will be sharing a band and bringing the “Marching Ranges Tour,” To Lethbridge for the first time, Oct. 17 at the Slice. They are beginning their tour in California. Edel played a solo acoustic show at the Owl Acoustic Lounge last time he was in Lethbridge.
There is no cover charge.
There are several open mics as usual this week as well. Taylor Ackerman hosts the Slice’s open jam tonight. The L.A. Beat open jam on Wednesday, Oct. 14 features Sarah Burton and Amy Thiessen. The Folk Club also has their open mic on Friday, which takes place on the second and fourth Fridays of the month. Don”t forget about a new open mic at the Old YorkPub on Thursdays. And those are just a few of them.
if you like classical music, The Lethbridge Symphony officially opens their Masters Series, Monday, Oct. 17, at the Southminster United Church featuring cellist Mark Rodgers he Mozart-inspired Tchaikovsky Rococo Variations playing tribute to the elegant Classical style.
Franck’s only symphony, completed in 1888 just two years before his death, demonstrates the full and rich sounds of a symphonic orchestra taking the listener on an emotional journey – from melancholy to joy.They will also be playing selections from the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and the Half Blood Prince movie soundtracks. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.. The concert begins at 8 p.m.
