Lethbridge’s arts community will have a more prominent role at the 2012 Alberta Summer games, July 26-29.
“ There will be the best of the best for sports that week, we want to feature the best of the best of Lethbridge’s arts scene,” said Suzanne Lint, Allied Arts Council Executive Director and Cultural Director for the Alberta Summer games.
So they are look looking for artists, musicians, jugglers, buskers and any performers to perform at each of the venues.
“We have quite a diverse arts community, but it can be hard to get people out to see them,” Lint continued during the official launch of the event, March 19 at city hall, which featured the Green Fools, stilt walkers dressed as giant birds wandering through a good sized crowd.
They we want to make sure there is a cultural component to the games which will involve 3,000 athletes competing in 15 different sports.
In addition to buskers and street performers, the Lethbridge Jazz Society will be pairing local jazz performers in local restaurants and pubs downtown.
There will also be a two day long arts market at the Gate, July 27-28 featuring local handicrafts and hand made art.
There will also be a gallery hop, July 28 including exhibits at the Bowman Arts Centre, Southern Alberta Art Gallery and other alternative venues.
“There is a lot of opportunity,” Lint said.
“And we’ll be offering a moderate honourarium like we do for Arts Days,” she said.
