The 24th Street Wailers Sound like the Pack AD with a horn section on their new CD ’Unshakeable.’
The young Toronto based band is powered by drummer vocalist Lindsay Beaver and her husband, bassist Mike Archer along with songwriter/ guitarist Emily Burgess and saxophonist Jon Wong.
The rhythm section is especially “unshakable” throughout the 11 track CD.
Beaver has a distinctive raspy, distorted voice hence the Pack AD comparison. She is completely locked in with her husband as Burgess and Wong add extra textures.
Each instrument gets to shine on particular tracks.
The saxophone dominates the first two tracks, the sassy “Home Cookin’” and “Unshakeable.”
The instrumental “Love Triangle” lays down a solid, slightly overdriven guitar based groove with help from Carter Chaplin and Marc Doucet, while the bass and drums are sure to get those toes a tapping.
The sax is back on “Trouble,” another toe tapper.
The guitar and saxophone mesh beautifully on “What Can Ya Give Me Now,” while the rhythm section keeps on driving forward.
While the distorted vocals are reminiscent of the Pack AD, the music comes right out of ’50s jazz and rockabilly especially on the outstanding “Jack, Jim, Johnny and Me.”
Throughout Beaver belts out the blues like she was born with them. Wong blows some mighty fine sax and Mike Archer play in the pocket while Burgess plays tastefull leads and catchy rhythm.
They end the Cd with “Don’t Make it Easy,” which makes the whole CD very easy to love.
