Southern Ontario songwriter Brian Dunn and the Gentle Northwesters played a laid back show of original early ’70s roots rock mixed with a touch of ’80s pop at the Slice, June 22.
They were reminiscent of the Band and the John Henrys, especially with some gut crunching organ.
Their lead guitarist played a perfectly tasteful solos while Dunn retuned his guitar while singing all the lyrics. They played “Winnipeg,” one of many songs getting a lot of airplay on CKUA then slowly
picked up the tempo. Dunn sang some pleasant melodies and his band was behind him every step of the way.
I caught Zojo Black’s strong second set of covers including Blue Rodeo’s “December Rain” and Bob Dylan’s “Wagon Wheel.”
And because they wanted to celebrate lead guitarist Paul Kype’s 50th birthday, they did an extended jam on his song “Freight Train” as frontman Greg Gomola and Paul Kype traded guitar solos. The band included most of the members of Texas Flood as well as Tyson Maiko playing bass.
