Vancouver based musician Marq DeSouza can’t wait to come back home for a gig at the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Aug. 10.
“It will be a good night,” said DeSouza, who combines visits home to see his family with setting up a gig some place. It has been about a year and a half since his last visit.
“(Last time we were here) We had a really good time. And it’s a good way to see everybody all in one place,” he said. time at the last show there,” he said. He has released five CDs of original folk tinged rock music beginning with his debut in 1999, which he re-released in 2009, when he also released his most recent CD “… and All His Boyish Charms. Two of the CDs were with rock band Solarbaby.
“I’ll be playing a couple sets of folk and rock music. There might be a couple special guest coming out, but I’m not sure, ” he said adding he was considering getting an impromptu band to play with him, but it might be too late.
Last time he played the Owl, his dad joined him on stage.
“Unfortunately he won’t be able to this time, he’s gigging the same night. He keeps busy playing places like the Legion,” DeSouza said.
“ I want to do a big social event. I want to make it a big party so everyone I knew can come out and see me,” he said.
“I’m excited to come back and see some of the new places there,” he said.
“ I hope a lot of people come out. It’s exciting to see friends and family. I”m always surprised to see people I haven’t spoken to for years or found out about me on Facebook,” he enthused.
He is glad to be coming back and seeing more venues offering live original music.
“When I was here there were a lot of venues offering cover band playing classic rock songs, but as far as original music, there wasn’t much, ” he observed.
He has been keeping busy wearing another hat — booking acts for Trees, a coffeehouse in the Gastown area of Vancouver.
“It’s just been fun to be wearing the booker sort of hat,” he said. He has also been playing a lot of sessions for other musicians, so he hasn’t been writing a lot of his own music.
“ I always have a little project to do,” he said.
“I’ve been on cruise control for a while, but something will be happening soon. I will focus on a bigger project, like a record or EP. But it won’t be for about another year,” he said.
“Formats have changed a lot , so you don’t really need a full length record anymore,” he said.
