Tom Savage of Kingston based alt country/ rock band The Tom Savage Trio, likes a challenge. He made a New Year’s resolution to write a song a week and stuck to it, so much so that he recorded a new CD with many of them. The Tom Savage bring savage country rock back to Lethbridge this week. “It started as a joke,” Savage said, at the beginning of a tour which brings his energetic, loud brand Drive-By Truckers style alt country to the Slice, Sept. 20.

“I posted it on Facebook as a New Year’s resolution I thought I’d break in a week, but my friend (New Brunswick blues rocker) Ross Neilsen saw it and called me and said ‘I’ll do it with you.’”

Savage has been posting his new songs on Soundcloud as well as his website www.tomsavage.ca, as well as his Facebook page.

While Neilsen lasted 15 or 16 weeks, Savage stuck to it for 36 and counting.
“ He kind of fell off the truck when he went on tour. I’m going to keep trying it while I’m on tour,” Savage said.

“It helped me a lot with the writing process,” he said.
“ I took some different approaches and wrote in some different genres. It’s been a good creative exercise.”

Some of them appear on his latest CD “Overdrive Express” which is his seventh CD including acoustic albums, live albums and digital only releases.

I think Ross recorded a couple of his on his new record too,” he said.

“ It’s rock and roll,” he described.
He’ll be playing  some of the new record as well as songs from his best known CD “The County Line” at his Lethbridge show.

“ We’ll get ’er cranked up. It has been about a year since we were there. We usually play there on a Monday, but it is a Thursday night. It’s getting close to the weekend. So there will be some loud guitars and solos as usual,” he said.
There is no cover for the show, which is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m.
