Epic Dermis explores the art of tattoos

E-mail Print

Tattoos aren’t just for bikers and criminals anymore according to Todd Lacharite, who has created an entire art show  around tattoos called Epic Dermis. Some of the pieces to be part of Epic Dermis. Photo by Richard Amery

It opens on Feb. 9 at the Drunken Sailor, 323 6th Street South.

“It’s not just  bikers or criminals who have them, it’s doctors and lawyers too who see them as art. Most of the people I know have tattoos,” Lacharite said.

While Lacharite has received a baker’s dozen worth of pieces so far with another 25 expected, there is room for more, so the deadline for submissions is Feb. 4.

Some of the works have actually been tattooed onto  fake skins aspiring tattoo artists use to train, others are in the form of paintings.

Drunken Sailor owner Loralee Sand Edwards  has the only multi-media piece in the show.

“It is a video about skin. It is a little performance art piece,” she described adding she is happy to host the event in the back of her store.

“Most of the pieces are two dimensional projects. And we’ll have a woman who does body painting who will be bringing a live model painted to look like she’s tattooed,” she continued.

“Plus we’ll have a person who does henna tattoos,” she added.

“ It’s a good mixture.”

Epic Dermis  will run until March 13, when it ends with a  tattoo party at  Studio Nightclub featuring tattooed  performance artists  the Show Devils plus the music of Redrum Triumph and the Void, closing things off.

Advance tickets for the closing show cost $10.

There is no charge to attend the opening of the exhibit which will be on the same Saturday night as exhibit openings at the Trianon and the Southern Alberta Art Gallery.
