Lethbridge is just getting into the swing of things for September, so things are pretty slow this week. The biggest event takes place at the University of Lethbridge. Freshfest features numerous events. They have several DJs performing in the Zoo, Sept. 6 beginning at 9 p.m. DJ Fuze, Opie, Phunky Freq and Streeter will all be performing at the Rumble in the Jungle.
Every band and his dog are coming to Lethbridge to play the Freshfest jamboree, Sept. 7. it is a big outdoor show running from 2 p.m. until 11 p.m.
There are a variety of acts including indie rock bands Said the Whale, Foam Lake and Hollerado, electronica music including USS, Funk Hunters, local acts Lustre Creame and the Ruby Plumes and quirky acts including Shotgun Jimmie and the Joe.
As Freshfest is only for university students, pickings are pretty slim for the rest of the community.
However the Ruby Plumes release their new single, Sept. 6 at the Slice with the Faps and Jesse and the Dandelions. Admission is five dollars.
The Owl Acoustic Lounge has indie rock with Federal Lights, Sept. 6. And Jay Bowcott returns to the Owl Acoustic Lounge with Michael Coughlan, Sept. 7.
The Lethbridge Folk Club is also back in action this week.
Bluegrass jams take place on the first and third Fridays of every month at the Wolf’s Den’s new location behind MJ Cycle 1502 2nd Ave South beginning Sept. 6.
The club has moved most of the chairs, all of the stage, trimmed down the tables and the beer fridge and coffee maker into this new intimate location. Open mics take place on the second and fourth Fridays of every month. Concerts take place monthly at the Moose Hall. The bluegrass jam begins at 7:30 p.m. Open mics begins at 8 p.m. There is a two dollar cover to attend.
As always there are a lot of excellent local musicians performing.
James Oldenburg plays a solo show at Ric’s Grill on Wednesday, Sept. 4 while classical guitarist Dale Ketcheson returns to the Mocha Cabana, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 6 and Sept. 7.
