Art’s Alive and well in the schools and at SAAG

E-mail Print

Art is indeed alive and well in Lethbridge schools.

The Southern Alberta Art Gallery are excited to present the 37th annual Art’s Alive exhibit, Saturday May 3.
“It’s so exciting. The kids are so talented, I feel their teachers are really encouraging them to get creative,” said SAAGSAAG Gallery Educator Paige Rosner places one of over 400 works in the Art’s Alive exhibit. Photo by Richard Amery communications coordinator Nicole Hembroff, adding there are over 400 individual pieces in this year’s exhibition, which opens with an opening reception at 1 p.m., Sunday, May 4.

“Art can be an accomplishment that they should be proud of,” she continued.

Students ranging from kindergarten to Grade 12 created a variety of drawings, paintings, sculptures and colourful submissions including a huge group exhibition made of 1,000 colourfully designed coffee filters from Saint Patrick’s Fine Arts Elementary School.

The work, called “Forest of  One Thousand Wonders,” was inspired by American artist Dale Chihuli’s work “Macchia.”

“You have students who are just starting to create art to people who have been doing it for years who may be considering studying art at a post secondary level and possibly as a career,” she continued.

The works also explore a range of subject matter including seasons, nature, portraits, animals and even music.
“There are also more abstracts,” she said.

The students come from Lethbridge School District 51 as well as the Holy Spirit separate school division.
Every year the schools art teachers working in conjunction with the Southern Alberta Art Gallery and Lethbridge School District 51  representative Phyllis Furukawa, submit their students’ best works.
The exhibition runs until June 15.
