Shred Kelly are excited about the new year which will begin with a brand new CD “Sing to the Night,” which will be released on Jan. 27.
Just before that, the Fernie based stoke folk band will play the first of two Lethbridge shows happening early in the new year as they play the University of Lethbridge Student Union’s second annual Frost Bite Rail Jam Neon Chalet Shaker Cabaret , Jan. 17 which also features Montreal’s DJs Botnek and rap collective Roguies Clique.'
“ Hopefully we’ll have the discs ready for the tour in January,’” said keyboardist/ vocalist Sage McBride who is pleased with the new, more mature and introspective work.
“it’s 11 songs. I sing lead vocals on six of them and Tim (Newton, banjo player and singer) sings on five,” she described.
“It’s a lot more reflecting on the past situations. It’s a lot more personal,” she added.
“ It comments on the life cycles to where we are now,” she said adding it is also very upbeat and danceable.
“ I think it’s because as you get older, you just start digging deeper and look more into yourself. But it’s still very upbeat and danceable. It’s very much danceable because that is the music we like to play,” McBride continued.
They recorded the CD last May and June in Toronto and made a video for their song “Family Oh Family.”
“ We learned a lot from the last CD. We spent another six and a half weeks taking out parts that didn’t really fit. So it has been more than revised,” she added.
They added a new guitar player, whose influence is heard on the new CD.
“ But it will be the same lineup when we had when we played with Delhi 2 Dublin last year,” she said.
They will be doing an official CD release tour this winter which comes back to Lethbridge, Feb. 6 for a show at the Slice with Cowpuncher.
“We’re going to Halifax and back in February,” she said.
“ Everybody knows people across the country, so hopefully we will be able to bring some fun to the towns this winter,” she said.
“We’re looking forward to playing the songs we’ve been writing over the past year,” she added.
“ We’ll be playing the whole CD ( for their Feb. 6 show). For the rail jam show we will be playing songs from the previous albums and a couple from the new CD. We’re going to keep most of the new material in our pockets for the CD release tour. That show will be a totally revamped show,” she said.
Shred Kelly enjoyed taking part in the B.C. PEAK Performance Project (A $100,000 competition from Vancouver radio station The PEAK for bands who do a variety of career related activities and a attend workshops and a boot camp) even though they didn’t win.
“That was great. We didn’t place but the experience was really amazing,” McBride said.
“ But we got to go to the band camp and everyone got a lot of new friends,” she said.
“It was everything we would have to do for our real business anyway,” she said.
Shred Kelly played the University of Lethbridge Student’s Union, Jan. 17. They will be back in Lethbridge, Feb. 6to play the Slice with Cowpuncher. Tickets cost $25.
