Calgary bass and drums rocker duo HighKicks are getting their kicks on the road, sometimes to the detriment of their bodies.
“ I’ve got a broken ankle and a broken collarbone,” said Highkicks bassist/ vocalist Dan Vachon who is also frontman for the Dudes and Dojo Workhorse.
“ And I wish I had a cool story about it. But we (Vacon and drummer Matt Doherty who is also drummer in Dojo Workhorse and the Dudes) decided to have a who’s faster contest in Kimberly, down a steep, icy hill covered in gravel,” Vacon said.
“ But I guess I’ve got two weeks to get fighting fit,” he said.
The HighKicks play St. Patrick’s Day in Lethbridge, March 17 with the Mohrs.
“ We’re actually bookending the tour in Lethbridge because we start the tour in Lethbridge and end it in Winnipeg. Then we have to book it back to Lethbridge to start a tour with the Dudes on April11 at the Italian Canadian Club,” he said.
“But I’ve played a couple shows since then in the interior of B.C. ,” he said.
He has been busy in writing mode for both the HighKicks and the Dudes.
“We had three songs in the movie Wolf Cop. We had two new songs and an older song ‘Fake Dad’ which I think was during the robbery scene and ‘We’re Wolves.’
The older song was ‘Good Life’ which I think was during the credits,” he said.
He noted Dojo Workhorse also has a new album ready to go.
Vacon is pleased to keep Highkicks a bass and drums duo.
“That’s all you need. And I’ve got a box that makes my bass sound like a guitar,” he said adding he is pleased with how well people have responded to Highkicks.
“It’s blown up bigger than we expected. We couldn’t be happier,” he continued adding all three of his bands are working on new material including Highkicks.
“We’ve got several new songs we’ll be playing,” he said.
They have never played with the Mohrs before.
“I’ve never met them before, but I’ve talked to a couple of them. They seem like nice kids. It will be nice to play with kids from the Big Smoke,” he said.
He is excited about the show.
“Tell people to come out wearing clothing they don’t mind getting sweaty and dirty,” he said.
The show begins at 8 p.m. at the Slice , March 17. There will be a $10 cover.
