I caught the end of Ben Sures’ March 28 show at the Lethbridge College Cave for the Lethbridge Folk Club.
His quirky sense of humour and stream of consciousness lyrics are guaranteed to put a smile on the face.
He introduced his trio harmonica playing drummer Bramwell Park and bassist Tyson Maiko, with a story about talking to John Wort Hannam about who to use as a bassist and thinking he had the wrong Tyson.
The trio clicked and Sures affable personality and raspy, gurgling voice reminiscent of Paul Simon was a sure hit with the audience.
He sang the pensive “ Where Are they Now” from his most recent CD “ Son of Trouble.”
He had already lead a good sized audience and lead them through two more including the upbeat, cheerful “ Everybody Matters” and the encore “I Could Be Your Man,” one of the quirky highlights from “ Son of Trouble.”
Bramwell Park showed off his harmonica playing capabilities on “ You’re Not My Last Girlfriend Anymore,” which was another of the show’s highlights.
Throughout the show he played everything from exotic reggae flavoured songs to folk and blues music.
