Ukuleles are all the rage, so two Lethbridge women are organizing the second ukulele appreciation night at the Owl Acoustic Lounge, May 2.
“They’re like baby guitars,” joked Becky Johnston, one of the organizers of the event.
“I resent that,” added Mary- Anne McTrowe, the other organizer, who has been playing the ukulele for 20 years and who is veritable encyclopedia of ukulele lore and history.
Johnston organized a ukulele appreciation night two years ago, but decided to bring it back after noticing a resurgence in ukulele interest, especially due to the popularity of the monthly ukulele jams at CASA.
“You can play really complicated music on a ukulele or else you can write a song that is simple and still resonates emotionally,” Johnston said.
“And they’re very small, so they are portable,” she added.
“ We’ll be leading it from the stage,” McTrowe said adding everyone can play from the audience. Bring your own ukulele, though there will be at least one spare available for use. They have a Facebook group which includes the songs the jam will include.
Johnston said the ukulele appreciation night is all about creating a community of ukulele aficionados who share a passion for the four stringed instruments.
Ukulele appreciation night takes place May 2 at the Owl Acoustic Lounge beginning at 7 p.m.
