Gob give up the pop for straight ahead punk

Scores was a fine host for Vancouver pop punk band Gob, June 26, who pretty much eliminated their pop side and focused on their inner punks for their energetic set of music which featured songs from their very earliest EP to their latest singles.

The show, which was close to sold out and almost immediately drew a ferocious mosh pit in a confined space with big guys bouncing off of each other and sometimes falling on the floor where they were picked up and tossed back in the pit by fellow moshers.

They started off on a high octane biting punk note and barely took time to breathe in between songs.

Guitarist Theo Goutzinakis sang most of the short, loud, sweet and furious songs in the  first part of their set, then Tom Thacker over took over for the hit singles part of the show including their best known song “I Hear You Calling”  and “Give Up The Grudge” which wound down their set and had everyone singing along.

They played songs from throughout their catalogue from Fuck Off  from their first EP and earlier songs from early singles “Too Late No Friends,” to their latest single and “Radio Hell” from their latest CD. Plus their version of the Rolling Stones’ “Paint it Black.”

As always, they had lots of intensity and of energy and while they talked to the crowd a little bit, much of their dialogue was lost in the echoing room.
I only caught the end of an energetic set by the Youngbloods and missed Open 24-7 completely.
