Rotary Dragon Boat Races feature much missed local talent

E-mail Print PDF

I didn’t get to a lot of the Dragon Boat Races to hear a variety of local musicians performing in Henderson Lake Park. But there were two acts I made a point of seeing.

Shaela Miler and aul holden playing the Rotary Dragon Boat races. Photo by Richard AmeryI wanted to see a new line-up of local rockabilly trio Bent 8 featuring the rhythm section Keenan Pezderic upright bass and drummer Scott Mezei backingguitarist/ lead vocalist Dino Caravaggio.

They played a lot of energetic, twangy  Sun Studios  style rockabilly and country music.

So there was plenty of Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley and rockabilly classics like “Mystery Train.”Dino Caravaggio of Bent 8 at the Rotary Dragon Boat Races. Photo by Richard Amery

I haven’t heard  Shaela Miller play for a while, so I wanted to see her and her band.

Guitarist/ vocalist Shaela Miller was backed by  drummer Tyler Bird, Paul Holden upright bass and Ryan Dyck playing steel guitar.

They played everything from really early songs like “Station” from her first EP, crowd pleasers like “Loving Me” a couple new songs from  “Curtains,” her CD with Treeline including the title track “Curtains” and one of my favourites “Problems.”

She also played a lot of traditional, tear in your beer country classics, though there wen‘t any tears , just a whole lot of sweat on a sweltering day at Henderson Lake.
