If you haven’t been whooped up enough by whoop up days, the eighth annual Bigwood festival just outside of Lethbridge on Research Road features a nice helping of local talent plus special guests, Aug. 22.
Eight bands will be playing beginning at 7 p.m..
Local acts included alternative rock band Fox Eyes, modern rock trio the Supervoid and the annual gig from the Dirti Speshuls who all share a north side jam space plus Calgary’s A Day As Wolves, Lethbridge funk rock band Cosmic Charley returning, Nanaimo’s Moths and Locusts who have released a split 7 inch with Pubic Animal and local dark country band The Dearly Departed who will close things off.
“ A Day as Wolves are a fuzzed out blues rock band from Calgary, the Dirti Speshuls always play and Moths and Locusts from Nanaimo are a mostly instrumental band,” said organizer Todd Carter who also fronts The Dirti Speshuls.
He noted cancelled gigs resulted in some of the out of town bands working it out to have a gigs in the area.
Bigwood was founded eight years ago as semi-private invite only event as an excuse for local bands to play together, but this years doors are open to everybody and several out of town bands.
“ The Dearly Departed will play last. We always have a quieter band last to avoid noise complaints,” he said. The event is BYOB. Attendees should bring their own lawn chairs. But the Firey Greek will be on hand for food.
There is also Bigwood merch this year including t- shirts and beer cozies.
“People have been asking us for years to have merch,” Carter said.
CKXU will also be on hand with a table to talk about Love and Records.
“ It is always a good time,” Carter said.
“It’s like a summer barbecue to showcase local rock and roll and special guests,” he said.
Tickets are available for $25 in advance from Blueprint.
