After a busy back to school week in Lethbridge, you can take a breather. Though not much of one as ArtsDays and Word on the Street begin on Sept. 20.
And there are still a couple of excellent shows of all genres happening, beginning with a big thrash, progressive rock, deathcore and traditional metal show at Inferno, Sept. 16 when Vancouver progressive thrash metal band Expain bring their tour with Grand Forks’ groove metal band Slagduster, who were last here in 2011to Lethbridge. Local metal band Penitentz plus the Avulsion as well as Calgary deathcore band Nailgun are also on the bill. Sengage plays their last show in a while as well that night. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. There is a $10 cover.
The Owl Acoustic Lounge turns things up on a Thursday as Calgary Celtic punks the RiverJacks stop by with Winnipeg based female punk duo Mobina Galore as well as the Penske File.
Think Tank Events presents a cult movie art show opening at the Owl Acoustic Lounge, on Friday, Sept. 17 with local progressive rock band the new Weather Machine performing.
On a quieter note, Karen Romanchuk returns to the Mocha Cabana on Friday and Saturday in place of folk rock duo Carla Olive and Toni Vere who were originally scheduled. Strangling Wolf will be playing some country music at Casino Lethbridge on the weekend.
The Slice has an electro pop show featuring Toronto ’80s influenced synth toc/ electro funk band TWRP as well as Nashville based soul, electrop pop/synth rock band and “the world’s sweatiest band,” Terror Pigeon on Friday. There is a $10 cover for the show, which begins at 9:30 p.m.
If you love hip hop music, on Sept. 19, Studio 54 features Swollen Members’ Madchild, plus Philadelphia rapper Adlib plus a birthday party for local rapper Pyke, as well as Pimpton and Animal Nation. The show begins at 9 p.m.. Advance tickets cost $20.
Saturday night is a great night for open mics as well. The Owl Acoustic Lounge has a family jam from 1:30- 4 p.m., Sept. 19 and Honker’s introduces a regular Saturday afternoon jam with Steve Keenan, Greg Gomola and Kelly Klimchuk from 3-7 p.m on Sept. 19 as well. The first Saturday jam was last week.
The Slice features an excellent roots and country show on Sept. 19. The Harvest Time Hootenanny features the Good Ol’ Goats, who were a highlight of this year’s South Country Fair.
Eyes on Ivan and Mike Nash will be performing. There is a $15 cover for the show.
And, if you want to laugh, Roman Danylo and his group the Comic Strippers perform at the Yates Theatre, Sept. 19 as well.
Tickets cost $44 each or $39 for groups of six or more.
Zombies take over Galt Garden on Sept . 19 as well with zombies gathering for the ninth annual zombie walk beginning at 1:30 p.m. Katt Panic MUA will be doing make up for a donation to charity. The walk begins at 3:30 p.m.
It is also a great week for art and drama.
Two new exhibits open at CASA on Sept. 19 as Annie Martin presents her new works in Flotilla and Barb Goodman has a new exhibit called The Disassembled and Catalogued Identity. The opening reception for both exhibits is Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.
And , on the drama front, A group of University of Lethbridge grads bring back Jim McCrackin, Sept. 18 and 19 to University Theatre.“Release the McCrackin is the thirsdinstallment of Accidental Theatre company’s multi-media comedy adventure starring Brent Felzien, Willie Banfield, Clifford Kelly, Kimberlee Stadelmann and Neil LeGrandeur. The play is about a man who was shot and left for dead awakening from a coma is nursed back to health by mysterious monks who lead him on a journey of self- enlightenment and inner peace in between memories of his past and talent for beating up thugs. It was written by fellow Univeristy of Lethbridge alumni Amos Altman.
This hilarious live action hit appears at University of Lethbridge Theatre Sept. 18 and 19 at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at the U of L Box Office: $14.50 + GST in advance, and $17.50 +GST at the door.
