November starts off with a bang and a busy week with events happening pretty much every night.
B.C. Peak Performance winners Good For Grapes return to the Slice on Wednesday, Nov. 4 to rock a Wednesday night in support of their new CD “The Ropes.” They were last here in the summer opening for the Wet Secrets. They have a heap of beautiful vocal harmonies and oodles of multi-instrumental prowess. There is no cover for the show.
For something weird and dangerous, Inferno features The Danger Thrill show featuring a variety of crazy stunts, sword swallowing, a bed of nails, a ladder of swords, burlesque, the world's fattest contortionist and much more. The show begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door.
Thursdays are usually an off night, but not Nov. 5 with two big shows happening at “competing” venues.
Average Joes features Calgary/ Toronto hop hop musician Jocelyn Alice. Her hit “Jackpot” gets a lot of play on modern pop radio stations like 98.1 the Bridge. Her show begins at 8:30 p.m. Advance tickets are $10 or $15 on the day of the show.
Across town on Mayor Magrath Drive where Scores used to be, a new venue, Coyote Joes, owned by the same owner as Average Joes, features a big country night with Jason Benoit and the always popular Shane Chisholm. Benoit is a rising country star from a small town of Fox Island River in Newfoundland. His single “Gone Long Gone” is his first Top 10 hit. Shane Chisholm is a four time CCMA award winner among other accolades and is best known for playing an upright bass he build from a van’s gas tank. Advance tickets are $10 or $15 at the door. The show begins at 8 p.m.
Inferno is all about hip hop this week with Thuglife performing on Nov. 5 and Luke Prozac and Trey Mark the next night. There is a $10 cover for Thuglife and $5 for Luke Prozac and Treymark.
There is a lot of variety on the weekend.
Mwansa Mwansa brings her lovely, soulful voice to the Mocha Cabana with her band, Nov. 6 and 7 from 6-9 p.m..
The Lethbridge Folk Club features folk singer/ songwriter Jenny Allen at the Wolf‘s Den, Nov. 6. She will be accompanied by Pete Loughlin. Tickets are $25 members, $30 invited guests including a season's membership. It begins at 8 p.m.
If you want to play and remember local musician Frank Dooley, there is a No Boo Hoo Shite night open jam at the Slice in Dooley's honour, Nov. 6. He passed away last year.
The Slice rocks with the sound of Edmonton’s the Hearts, who play Nov. 7. They are touring in support of their brand new CD “Equal Love.” There is a five dollar cover for the show. Edmonton based, Lethbridge born indie rock band Jesse and the Dandelions are also on the bill.
And local bluesman Papa King releases his new CD “Gutted to the Studs” at the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Nov. 7 with Scott Mezei,Doug Freeman and Steve Keenan.
Keenan has his usual busy week hosting the Friday night blues jam at Honker's as well as the Saturday afternoon open mic. There are plenty of open mic s as always. The Blue Ridge Mountain society has their monthly country jam at The Moose Hall on Sunday, and if you play ukulele, the monthly open ukulele jam is at CASA, Sunday, 2-3 p.m.
And wouldn’t you know it, the big rock show of the week is also on a Sunday at Average Joes as L.A. rockers Buckcherry and the Wild hit Average Joes, Nov. 8. Tickets $50 door $45 advance.
There are great early week shows as well with Juno nominated, East Coast Award winning pop and soul singer Chelsea Amber visiting the Slice on Monday, Nov. 7. There is no cover for the show, which begins at 9 p.m.
And a sold out show with Tom Wilson’s psychedelic folk band Lee Harvey Osmond which may be moved to the German Canadian Club due to selling out the Geomatic Attic, happens on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 8 p.m.
