Calgary rockabilly quartet Peter and the Wolves rocked in 2016 at the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Jan 2 with some hip swinging, toe tapping, vintage sounding rockabilly.
They played several upbeat originals powered by plenty of twanging Gretsch and rock and keyboards which brought back the sound of the 1950s. I caught the end of their first set, which was a rollicking version of “She’s Sexy and 17,” and had to hang out for the second.
They had a groove filled feel which was immediately appealing to the good sized crowd.
The second set began with a spooky version of Nancy Sinatra’s “ Bang, Bang,” which featured pompadoured frontman Peter Cormier and drummer Ms. Cherry Kisses taking turns singing lead vocals. The Spirit of Elvis Presley was strong in Cormier’s voice throughout the set. He even looked a little like the King.
“One More Shot” was a highlight,” as was a sinister cover of “St. James Infirmary.”
Ms. Cherry Kisses sang quite a bit while laying down an unstoppable shuffle which had several people dancing in front of the stage.
“Carolina” was another highlight,” as was their rocking version of the Stray Cats’ ’80s hit “Rock This Town.”
