Calgary based guitar and drums Miesha and the Spanks and the Highkicks return to Lethbridge, June 1 to prove once again, that duos do it better — this time at the Top Hat.

They will be joined by local duo Cope.

“This time I think we’re each doing a set, though at the end we might be on stage together,” said Miesha Louie, who always enjoys playing with the High Kicks aka the Dudes’ Dan Vacon on bass and drummer Matt Doherty.

“We play with them a lot. They’re our buddies,” said the lead singer/ guitarist of Miesha and the Spanks, noting  they last time they played together was in Golden, where they each did a set.

“I’m pumped to play with them again. It’s always fun to play with your friends,” she said.
She plays as much as possible as does Sean Hamilton who joined the Spanks last year on drums.

“Our old drummer moved to Vancouver. But Miesha and the Spanks has pretty much always been my project, where I play with whoever is available,” she said, noting she and her other drummers have always played in multiple projects.

“Sean plays in a lot of other projects. We both play a lot. I love touring and Sean feels the same way,” she said adding Hamilton was filling in for other drummers and officially joined Miesha and the Spanks in November.

One project Louie is excited about is a long distance collaboration with Daniel Farrant, who currently plays drums fro iconic British pop punk band the Buzzcocks.

“ It is really cool. We met at Sled island last year and I started doing sessions  for him. We’ve been doing long distance recording. We’ll e-mail ideas back and forth,”  she said, adding that relationship has resulted in a new two song seven inch Miesha and the Spanks record she hopes to release by the end of July, which will be the beginning of a new full length album.

“We’re doing two songs at a time. And he’s going to help us do a tour in the UK and Europe,” she enthused.
“That will be the first time we’ve been over there,” she said.

In addition to that, she is also busy working with the Calgary Girls Rock Camp, where girls 17 and under learn an instrument, form a band, write a song, record and play a show in a week.
“It will be the third year. We do one a year,” she said, adding Calgary’s Girls Rock camp is in August.

She’d also like to visit Girls Rock Camps in other cities.
“I’ve already planned one for Dawson City,” she said.
“ It’s so cool watching the girls develop. they’re pretty shy at first and then they get more confidence. I’ve never seen one go south yet. So it’s pretty spectacular,” she said.

She is looking forward to returning to Lethbridge.
“It’s been about a year. It’s always fun to go back and see how many people are still in the scene,” she said.
Miesha and the Spanks and High Kicks plus local duo Cope play The Top Hat, June 1. Doors open at 8 p.m.
 Tickets are $20.
