June starts off slowly, other than SOAR dominating the week.
But there are several excellent Calgary acts performing as well as lots of exceptional local talent.
Floyd Sillito plays traditional country for his regular gig at the Lethbridge Public Library at noon on June 1.
Miesha and the Spanks and the High Kicks return to Lethbridge to show duos do it better at the Top Hat, June 1. Both duos have been prominent faces on the Calgary music scene. Miesha and the Spanks are a punk infused guitar and drums duo featuring Miesha Louie and Sean Hamilton.
Highkicks is bass and drums duo featuring Dan Vacon of the Dudes and several other Calgary bands and drummer Matt Doherty plus local alternative rock duo Cope (Tyson Wiebe and Mick Hayward). Tickets are $20 in advance, Doors open at 8 p.m.
There are three special SOAR cabarets sprinkled throughout the week featuring an array of talent performing at Casa including music, dance, drama, comedy and magic. The first SOAR cabaret on Wednesday, June 1 features Griffin Cork, Justin Many Fingers and Newman Mentalism.
Cabaret 2, June 2 features Sundari, Tanya Plonka, The Bear, Kristin Krein and The Waif. Cabaret 3, June 4 features Improv with David Gabert, dance from Claire Lint and magician Ben Price.
They begin at 7 p.m. each night, There is a $10 cover for each cabaret.
There is a variety of music on the weekend as usual. The Mark Hall band are a little bit country at Casino Lethbridge, June 3 and 4. If you want rock— you’ve got it. AC DC tribute BC DC returns to Lethbridge to rock Sound Garden, June 3. The Nelson, B.C. based BC DC have been bringing the rock around the world since 1999 with their blend of Bon Scott era AC DC and a lot of humour. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance.
Also on June 3, dust off that old spandex, break out the hairspray and strategically placed sock and get ready to revisit the 80s with Cheeky Pig Porketta, who are holding a tribute to hair metal at the Slice featuring local bands revisiting their favourite cheesy metal moments.
The show begins at 9 p.m. There is a $10 cover. For something a little quieter Bridgette Yarwood’s jazz/ pop duo Ain’t Misbehavin’ return to the Mocha Cabana on Friday night, June 3. And Taber born, Calgary based songwriter Tanner James returns to the Owl Acoustic Lounge, June 3 with Amesi Daeira.
There is a lot of variety on Saturday night. The Lethbridge Silver and Gold Bands present an evening at the Pops at the College Drive Community Church, June 4 at 7 p.m.
The Silver Band, under the direction of Samuel Yamamoto, will perform audience favourites including “Imagine,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “Music from Braveheart,” “When You Wish Upon a Star” and more.
The Gold Band, under the direction of Ken Rogers, will perform audience favourites including “Tijuana Brass,” “Miss Saigon,” a Cole Porter medley and more. 14 member percussion ensemble Stickz will be joining them. Tickets are $15 regular and free for children under 12.
Lethbridge alt country musicians Dave McCann and the Firehearts return to the Slice, June 4 as well.
And take a trip all the way back to the 1950’s as young Calgary rockabilly revivalists Peter and the Wolves return to the Owl Acoustic Lounge, June 4, winding down a tour in support of their brand new CD “Papa’s Going Out of Town. The next week opens with an excellent folk/ rock show featuring Mike Edel and Matthew Robinson, June 6 at the Slice.
