Jesse and the Dandelions/ Mormon Girls pack the house for CD release party

As expected Jesse and the Dandelions had a standing room only crowd at the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Sept. 9 for the official CD release party for their new CD “True Blue.”Jesse Northey of Jesse and the Dandelions. Photo by Richard Amery

I arrived to see the end of Biloxi Parish’s set, which ended with a chaotic version of Neil Young’s  “Hey Hey My My” and missed Jom Comyn completely.

Frontman Jesse Northey spent a few years in Lethbridge being an integral part of the music scene before moving to Edmonton, so a lot of people have fond memories of him and were there in force. So he began the set with some of Jesse and the Dandelions’ old favourites like “Looking at the Sun” before breaking out the new material including the first single “ No Fun” from the new CD” which he introduced by talking about the video featuring  Northey reliving his figure skating days back in Fernie.

Never one to stand still for long, a lot of his set included even newer songs he hasn’t even released yet including “ Animate,” which was a little heavier than his usual  easygoing, mellow, really beautifully, shimmering ambient indie rock.

He ended his set with “Brother” from the new CD, before making way for the last act of the night, the Mormon Girls, aka Tyson Wiebe, Mickey Hayward and drummer Jon Vornbrock. As usual, they played a strong set of ’90s style alternative rock along the lines of the Foo Fighters, which was reminiscent of  Wiebe and Hayward’s other band  Planet Telex with Hayward singing. So there were plenty of dirty riffs and urgent vocals.
