Saskatchewan acts to rock Lethbridge this week

Saskatchewan rocks in June with several Saskatchewan based acts performing throughout the week.Mwansa Mwansa’s farewell party is sure to be a highlight of this week. Photo by Richard Amery
There isn’t a single Garry in Saskatoon female powered surf/ garage rock trio the Garrys who play the Slice, June 3 with fellow Saskatoon band the owners and local rock band J Blissette, returning home from their tour.
They play at 9 p.m.
Down the street two excellent Regina area musicians join forces at the Owl Acoustic Lounge when Moose Jaw singer songwriter Megan Nash returns to Lethbridge with Regina indie rock band Bears in Hazenmore. There is no cover for the show.
Calgary won’t be outdone on June 3 as a reunited Downway return to Lethbridge to play the Moose Hall with fellow Calgarians the Foul English and local punk/ garage rock trio Chief Mountain. There is a  $15 cover for this all ages show, which begins at 9 p.m. Downway have been started playing their addictive brand of melodic punk back in 1995, played the Warped Vans Tour with bad Religion and Green Day. they disbanded in 2002 but reunited in 2010.


 The Slice has an eclectic show on Wednesday with Calgary indie rock band the Fox Who Slept the Day Away and local synth pop musician Tyler Vanden Dool and HD and the Flacs The show begins at 9 p.m. Admission is by donation.
Smokehouse is starting to host metal shows.
 This week, Victoria hardcore band Vultures, Calgary metalcore band From the Wolves, Calgary death metal band Widow’s Peak and local metal bands the Avulsion and Chernoff play Smokehouse, at 7 p.m., June 2.

Local rock band To The Mountains have their official CD release party at the Smokehouse, June 3 with Quickdraw and Bring your Own Bodies. Tickets are $10 at the door. The show begins at 9 p.m.
If you like southern rock, Coyote Joes features Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute Swamp Music, June 2 at 9 p.m.. Tickets are $15 at the door, $10 in advance.

Local classic rock band Dory and the Weathermen are always eager to lend a hand to a good cause.
 They will be playing a special fundraiser for Uphill Both Ways and Woods homes, June 3 at the Southern Alberta Ethnic Association multi-Cultural centre. Cocktails are at 6 p.n., dinner at 7 and Dory and the Weathermen will be playing all your favourites after that. Tickets are $40.
On the other hand, if you like rockabilly music, local rockabilly trio Bent 8 play Casino Lethbridge during the day for the Bent 8 Boogie Car Show. They will be playing between noon at 3 p.m.


Local singer and performer Mwansa Mwansa is going to Toronto, so say good bye to her with a big gala show at the Slice, June 2.


Get funky with a mid week show at the Slice, June 1 with funk/ R and B trio Adequate. There is no cover for the show.
For something completely different, the SOAR festival for young artists is at Casa this week, offering performance opportunities and cabarets for young artists 35 and under though everybody is welcome to attend cabarets, on May 31, June 1 and 3. They begin at 7 p.m. each night with a variety of plays, magic acts and much more happening. Admission is $10 per cabaret or $50 for a SOAR pass which also includes admission to some interesting seminars taking place on Saturday at Casa.


There are early week shows too including a performance by Saskatoon based alternative rock band the Pistolwhips  who are touring in support of their brand new CD “Voices” at the Slice, Monday, June 5.
But before that, kick off the week and the month with laughter at the Owl Acoustic lounge stand up comedy open mic, May 31.
Tonight, May 30, local rock bands Outrun the Arrow and Scotch Whiskey Limosine will be sharing the Slice stage with Montreal band the Damn Truth. Admission is $10. Doors open at 8 p.m.
