The Owl Acoustic Lounge featured abrasive punk from a new Calgary band Harsh, Friday, Dec. 28 in a New Year’s Eve Eve eve celebration which also featured local alternative rock trio the Supervoid and Mombod, who closed the night.
I just missed the Supervoid, but was in time to be impressed by a short set of abrasive 1977 style punk rock they described as “Queer/Feminist/ Rage intensifies, which might have been apt if lead singer Rebecca Siferd wasn’t beaming and smiling as she danced.
Siferd’s piercing voice reminded me of the X-Ray Spex with a touch of Siouxie and the Banshees. They played an enjoyable set despite the singer being drowned out by the rhythm section. They ended their set with a song about toxic masculinity.
MomBod were in the mood to try out a couple new tunes, opening with one of them after after a few false starts.
They still draw heavily from ’90s alternative rock Riot Grrls and bands like Hole, L7 and Kittie but have shown a little bit more musical growth, adding a new instrumental and a cover from Moose Jaw based alternative rock/math rock duo the Faps.
The three, Drummer Amberlea Parker, guitarist Mandy Fox and bassist Sil Campus alternated singing lead vocals.
