New band on the Job in Lethbridge

E-mail Print PDF

Toronto punk band the Job visit the Slice, July 20.
Toronto pop-punk band “The Job” are prepared to do the job right, if  bringing back the spirit of British  pop/ punk like the Clash, Buzzcocks and XTC is the job at hand. They’ll be working hard at the Slice with the Crosstown Rivals, Monday night at the Slice.
“We’ve only done for or five  day tours around Ontario and the eastern United States. This is our first Cross Canadian tours,” said guitarist /vocalist Nyles  Miszczyk, whose voice on record sounds like he is from London, England rather than London, Ontario.
“That’s the way I learned to sing,”  he laughed.
“That’s where I got my chops — by listening to XTC, the Buzzcocks and  the Clash, it (the British singing accent) just comes naturally, ” he continued.
“When I sing in my natural Canadian accent, it just doesn’t sound right. It (British punk-pop) is definitely the stuff  we’re influenced by,” he said.

Fantastic fiddler tears it up with friends in high places

Carrie Rodriguez a monster talent with friends in high placesCarrie Rodriguez is not only a monster talent on fiddle, four-string mandobird and tenor guitar, as anybody at her July 8 show at the Geomatic Attic will attest, but also has  some pretty high profile  names  pulling for her. The Austin born, Brooklyn based classically trained violinist found she had a calling for folk and country music and was discovered playing at the South by Southwest in 2001 by Chip Taylor, a renown songwriter best known for writing “Wild Thing” and “Angel of the Morning.”
They subsequently recorded four albums together.
“He’s the reason I’m a singer,” Rodriguez said before her show, adding he pushed her into singing harmonies, then eventually singing solo.
“I just played fiddle for other artists, I never entertained the idea of singing,” she said adding she learned a lot just by watching Taylor perform and write.

Former Turncoat releases second solo CD

E-mail Print PDF
Andrew Scott, who is known for playing in, and releasing two CDs with, country rock band  the Turncoats, returned from two years teaching English and music in Japan, to release his second CD “13 Birds of Prey.”
“It tends to be a little bit of folk, a little bit of country, a little bit of blues and a little bit of rock,” Scott said of the CD  before his show at the Slice, July 12.
“In my opinion it’s a folk album, but I don’t like to call it that. Louis Armstrong said all music is folk music because ‘folk’ just means about people,” continued Scott who is getting married this weekend. He recorded much of the material while in Japan, and the rest in James Oldenburg’s studio in Lethbridge. Being in Japan also influenced Scott’s music to an extent.
“Music is very different in Japan because the Japanese  have very different musical tastes. What they consider to be cool isn’t necessarily what we consider to be cool. It’s very different  from Canada. I don’t really know how, ” he continued adding there is a strong musical community in Japan. The recording experience in Japan was also very different in an ineffable way.

Sweatshop Union can’t wait to play Lethbridge

E-mail Print PDF
Vancouver-based rapper Kyprios got hit by a car last time he was in Lethbridge, but that isn’t deterring him from looking
Kyprios is looking forward to returning to Lethbridge with Sweatshop Union.
forward to returning to the Blarney Stone to perform with Sweatshop Union, July 16.
“We were out on a beautiful jog near Henderson Lake and  I got hit by a car. I jumped on the hood of the car. He wasn’t looking. The guy almost killed me,” Kyprios said over the phone from Vancouver, where he was celebrating his 28th birthday. He was due to start a tour of B.C, Alberta and the Northwestern U.S with Sweatshop Union, July 10.
“But seriously, I am looking forward to getting back to Lethbridge. We have a day off the day before, So I’m hoping we can get in a day early. I was hoping to see a baseball game,” Kyprios continued, who was just in Lethbridge in May with Mobadass.
“There are a couple of differences. With Mobaddass, there is a band who are playing to support each other. If the bass player or guitarist screws up  and misses a note, you may have to improvise. With Sweatshop, we’re playing with a DJ so the music is all canned and the only person who can screw up is you. And it’s a lot more fun when you have all MCs on stage,” he said adding he enjoys working with Mobadass, Sweatshop Union as much as he enjoys working solo. In fact he has a new solo CD due out Oct. 5 called “Midnight Sun.”
