Toronto pop-punk band “The Job” are prepared to do the job right, if bringing back the spirit of British pop/ punk like the Clash, Buzzcocks and XTC is the job at hand. They’ll be working hard at the Slice with the Crosstown Rivals, Monday night at the Slice.
“We’ve only done for or five day tours around Ontario and the eastern United States. This is our first Cross Canadian tours,” said guitarist /vocalist Nyles Miszczyk, whose voice on record sounds like he is from London, England rather than London, Ontario.
“That’s the way I learned to sing,” he laughed.
“That’s where I got my chops — by listening to XTC, the Buzzcocks and the Clash, it (the British singing accent) just comes naturally, ” he continued.
“When I sing in my natural Canadian accent, it just doesn’t sound right. It (British punk-pop) is definitely the stuff we’re influenced by,” he said.
Carrie Rodriguez is not only a monster talent on fiddle, four-string mandobird and tenor guitar, as anybody at her July 8 show at the Geomatic Attic will attest, but also has some pretty high profile names pulling for her. The Austin born, Brooklyn based classically trained violinist found she had a calling for folk and country music and was discovered playing at the South by Southwest in 2001 by Chip Taylor, a renown songwriter best known for writing “Wild Thing” and “Angel of the Morning.”
