Our opening chamber concert perfectly foreshadows our 2017-2018 Season grand finale, with music that evokes the turning of the hours, and nature’s beauty. The Lethbridge Symphony’s Musaeus string quartet brings to life everything from the baroque through the romantic! This includes a taste of a piece the orchestra will close the Season with, that also features two excellent guests. Plus, enjoy a cash bar (beverages are permitted inside!), and an Afterglow reception, where you’ll have a chance to mingle with the performers.

A tribute concert to Autumn opens the 2018-2019 Lethbridge Symphony concert season, as their resident professional string quartet, Musaeus, presents Extra A – Fall in Strings on Friday, September 21, 2018 – 7:30 PM at Casa. The event, which includes a cash bar inside the venue, and an Afterglow reception giving the audience an opportunity to interact with the performers, is presented in partnership with LA Chefs.

Featured on the program is Joseph Haydn’s string quartet nicknamed The Lark, which he composed later in life, while in London, England. Most famously heard in Star Trek: Insurrection, and more recently in The Man in the High Castle and Mozart in the Jungle, the piece helped launch Haydn to fame across Europe, as it showcased his inventiveness.

“It sounds like it’s great fun to play,” comments executive director Melanie Gattiker. “Haydn wrote this on his first trip abroad in decades, and I think his enthusiasm for new experiences comes through.” It’s an appropriate choice, along with Mendelssohn’s first published string quartet (heavily influenced by the composer’s love of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream), since this marks the debut of new violist Gabriel Kastelic with Musaeus. “It will be an evening of firsts and excitement, and the quartets – both written and human – reflect that.”

The two quartets bookend a gem arranged for small chamber ensemble: the Autumn concerto of Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, performed along with guests Isabelle Robinson (violin) and Mary Lee Voort (keyboard). “I’m so excited for this piece, and not only because I love Vivaldi,” notes Gattiker. “Our soloist is thirteen-year-old Isabelle Robinson from right here in Lethbridge, and she is truly a rising star!”

Having earned two gold medals from the Royal Conservatory of Music and been awarded second place in the Canadian Music Competition, Robinson is a rare talent. The Autumn concerto is also a teaser of the Symphony’s season closer in May, at which Isabelle will perform the entire work with the orchestra. “Again, with the bookend theme!” remarks Gattiker with a laugh.

The Symphony kicks things off on October 15, 2018 – 7:30 PM at Southminster United Church, with Series 1 – Russian Inferno, featuring another impressive young violinist with ties to Alberta, Daniel Dastoor, as well as the famous Firebird Suite. The next Extra features local ensemble Cellissimo on March 1 and 2, 2019.

Tickets for Fall into Strings are $35, and are available any time at LethbridgeSymphony.org or Monday through Friday, 1 - 5 PM by calling 403.328.6808 x 101. Casa is the realization of a 20 year dream, shared by many in the Lethbridge arts community, to expand or replace the Bowman Arts Centre. This unique new facility far surpasses the original vision for expansion, and sets a new standard for interdisciplinary arts centres. It is about experimentation, incubation, learning and growing. Casa was built to serve a multi-generational community, with varying art skill sets and interests in all disciplines of the arts.

Designing the building was a comprehensive and collaborative process led by Nyhoff Architecture from (Calgary) working in conjunction with the local architectural firm of Ferrari Westwood Babits. The Architectural team visited numerous arts education institutions and also met with members of the local arts community to define requirements for a truly functional 42,000 square foot art centre. The resulting building design is truly impressive.

Funding for the project were provided by the Federal Build Canada Fund ($6,000,000.), the Provincial MSI Fund ($14,900,000.) and the City of Lethbridge ($200,000).
