Fosston, Saskatchewan singer songwriter Belle Plaine makes her Lethbridge debut at the Windy City Opry on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at the Slice with Gordie Tentrees and Jaxon Haldane.
Belle Plaine is releasing her latest CD “Malice, Mercy, Grief and Wrath.”

“It’s a lot different than the last albums,” she said, noting it is officially released on Oct. 19.

“The last album had more of a 1940s cabaret jazz feel. This album is more country and alt country, because I’m from Saskatchewan and it’s everywhere,” she said.

She enlisted a little help from fellow Saskatchewanites like Megan Nash,  Colter Wall and her partner Blake Berglund, but wanted to  do this record mostly on her own.
“Colter Wall sings one song with me ‘Is It Cheating.’ He’s done really well and he’s worked really hard,” she said.

“Blake has one co-writing credit on ‘Taxes and Death and You,” she said, adding she tried to do most of the CD on her own and had a hands on  role in pretty much everything from  PR to recording to artwork, so she didn’t use Berglund on much of the CD.

‘We’re both artists, so decided not to spend a lot of time in the studio together because we thought it be best to continue keeping a healthy relationship, and play more of a supportive role,” she said, adding the music taps into some pretty heavy emotions.

“Yet all of the songs sound so pretty,” she said.
“I wanted to show the opposite side of those emotions,” she noted adding the songs all have to do with the themes of  malice, mercy, grief and wrath.
“It’s been two years and I love it. I’ve just really enjoyed the creative process. I put a lot of work into everything including the artwork of the artifact itself,” she said.

 “ I’ve been working on the artwork and communicating with people  about making videos and writing grants and coming up with business plans and working with PR people, she said.

 While she has played with bigger bands and  on her previous CDS, for this one,  it was most important to be able to play it live by herself.

“I’ve played as a duo, a trio, six piece and toured with eight piece bands, which is a lot of fun, but it really isn’t viable,” she said, adding she will be playing a solo set in Lethbridge.
“I’ve never played Lethbridge before,” she said, adding the closest she has played has been Pincher Creek.

Belle Plaine, plus Gordie Tentrees and Jaxon Haldane play the Windy City Opry at the Slice, Wednesday, Oct. 10 with host  Shaela Miller. The show begins at 8 p.m. There is a $10 cover.
