Winnipeg based folk punk Greg Rekus observed he likely hold the record for out of town musicians hosting the Owl Acoustic lounge open mic, or at least, Winnipeg folk punk musicians.
It is always a pleasure to see him perform, of only for a few songs, and for a few people as he did Tuesday, Jan. 2.
UK musician Tim Holhouse was winding down his set as I arrived.
Holhouse, perched on Rekus’s stomping board adorned with tambourines and percussion instruments, played a frenetic, fast paced, heavy hitting acoustic set of folk music similar to Rekus.
He added a little bit of blues for one song before making way for Rekus.
Though Rekus has a new album “Sinners Go To Church, Saints Go To Jail,” out, he only played two songs from it including a hot cover of “Children Play With Matches.” by Philadelphia band Mischief Brew.
He also played a cover of tour mate Tim Holhouse’s “ Worst Year Ever.”
As usual he had a lot of energy, taking quick break from leaping around and stomping on his percussion box to play wild kazoo solos.
“ Rule Us,” was a highlight.
