When Yukon songwriters Kim Barlow and Anne Louise Genest discovered a shared joy in the string band sounds and story songs of Southern old time music, they joined their considerable musical forces (Juno-nominated Barlow on clawhammer banjo/vocals and Genest on guitar/vocals) to form Annie Lou. The fine skills of Lindy Jones on upright bass and vocals and Meredith Bates on fiddle round out the Annie Lou roster.

Old time music is based in instrumental, vocal, and songwriting traditions. Annie Lou is faithful to these, with stringband instrumentation, rich vocal harmonies, and original songwriting by Genest and Barlow that is fresh and new, yet firmly rooted in the old.

Annie Lou’s lush vocal harmonies, beautifully crafted songs, and solid musical chops capture audiences when these northern women take the stage. In performance the band gathers around one microphone in the traditional acoustic setting of old time music. Their songs reflect the solitude and grit of their northern home and draw a straight line to other times and places.

Ellen McIlwaine was born in Tennessee and moved with adoptive missionary parents to Japan when she was only two. Exposed to everything from Japanese Folk and Classical Music, American Rhythm & Blues greats like Ray Charles, Fats Domino and Professor Longhair on Japanese radio, as well as the Grand Ole Opry and European Classical Music on American Armed Forces Radio, while growing up in an International Community of families from India, Pakistan, the Middle East, Eastern and Western Europe and Asia, she was playing "World Music" before it was called World Music!

After starting out on Acoustic Guitar in Atlanta Georgia while attending Art School, she moved to Greenwich Village in 1966, opening for many Blues Greats, and getting to know Odetta, Richie Havens, Mississippi John Hurt & Jimi Hendrix to name but a few. Moving to Woodstock NY in 1968 and recording Fear Itself with her group of the same name, but going solo again in 1970, she gained cult status through her two Polydor albums "Honky Tonk Angel" 1972 and "We the People" 1973. These were followed by "The Guitar Album", a compilation of all the guitar players on Polydor in 1974: Link Wray, Rory Gallagher, John McLaughlin, Roy Buchannan et al. Ellen was the only female player.

Held together by equal measures of heartbreak and hope, and featuring performances from some of Canada’s most accomplished instrumentalists, Under the Big Big Sky plays like the soundtrack to a vintage film. A fluent mix of blues, jazz and R&B tinged western swing that pays homage to some of Russell deCarle’s all-time favourite artists while remaining simultaneously fresh and familiar.

As lead vocalist and bassist of iconic Canadian country roots band Prairie Oyster, deCarle is no stranger to awards and accolades. Over their career the 2008 CCMA Hall of Honour inductees have racked up an impressive list of JUNO and Canadian Country Music Awards, gold and platinum selling records and number one singles. As a songwriter deCarle has also been honoured with two SOCAN Song of the Year Awards. Once in 1994, for Prairie Oyster’s first number one single ‘Such A Lonely One’, and then again in 2008 for ‘One Way Track’, his co-write with Canadian folk legend, Willie P. Bennett.

You'd never think it to look at Paul Pigat, but behind that unassuming grin and underneath those Doc Watson glasses lurks one of the most restless, combustible musical imaginations ever crammed like so much canned heat into a single body. Blessed with a jazz man's sheen, a rockabilly heart and a hobo's soul, there aren't many genres of music that don't pull at Pigat's wayfaring imagination like a magnet. In many ways, it's a mystery why Paul Pigat isn't a household name yet. Maybe he'd be a lot easier to pin down if he wasn't so darn good at so many different things.

One could be forgiven for thinking that up until now Paul Pigat has spent his whole career flying under the radar. Like all those great old Stax records where Steve Cropper stood behind Otis Redding and played his heart out before anyone knew who he was, Pigat has been creating sweet sounds for some of the best artists in the country without getting the attention you'd expect. Still, you'd have to have been hiding under a pretty big rock to have never heard the immediately recognizable sound of his distinctive guitar playing as over the last several years this unassuming Vancouver native has quietly compiled a list of credits that would be the envy of anyone in the music business.

It’s been over six years since the last recorded effort from Captain Tractor; 2005’s North of the Yellowhead. During that time, Captain Tractor has continued to play shows in Western Canada, Toronto, and of course in their hometown of Edmonton where they continue to be leaders in the E-Town music and culture industry. Whether as a duo, trio, Power Trio, or the full six piece band, Captain Tractor is still rocking the waves, and why not? What else are they going to do?

Along the way, the band has brought a new member into the fold: their friend and colleague, award winning fiddler, Shannon Johnson.
