Sometimes Zachary Knuttila, and sometimes Alex Stooshinoff

Lying Light in the Quiet begin our guided tour through space mid-flight. As we soar above a sea of recognizable sounds we realize we've been here before - only the colours are deeper. Suddenly we are no longer above the ocean but instead below it. And as the waves of texture roll around us we begin to breath...as if for the first time.

Recovery, the duo’s debut album, was written as a series of recorded improvisations in Stooshinoff’s home studio during the summer of 2015. It is a record about the moments in which it was written: an impulsive expression of each musician’s emotions, and a conscious exploration of texture and space. Inspired by artists such as cLOUDDEAD and Bjork, the album hints at pop elements while maintaining a clear distance from the mainstream. It is spontaneous, patient, and filled with breathing- room.

While Recovery is built upon a predominantly synthetic aural foundation it gestures towards something more natural – an evolution, a progression. And while Lying Light in the Quiet are clearly in control of their sound it is also obvious that the pair are not afraid to venture dangerously close to the edge. Dancing between cyclical drums and full-bodied synth tones is something intangible, something that allows everything from found-sound to plucked guitars to all-out noise to inhabit its own space within the album’s narrative.
