Matt Epp returned to the Slice to play an upbeat, rocking set, in part to lead guitarist Jay Smith, April 20 at the Slice.
The rock edge Smith brought to the table made Epp’s more folk-pop feel sound a little reminiscent of Smith‘s band Matt Mays and El Torpedo.
And while I missed Smith’s solo set, I arrived in time to hear Epp carry some beautiful tenor melodies. He observed he had never had a Slice audience listening to him so intently.
He played much of the music from his latest CD “At Dawn,” including a couple of highlights “Met Someone” and “Red Winged Blackbird” as well as added a soulful twist to Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon.”
His hot band brought the party to approximately 50 people in the audience.
But they left the stage as Epp played a couple set of more laid back acoustic material.
He played some pretty, lilting guitar licks throughout and as always was very enjoyable to listen to.
