Jazz music marks Reading Week in Lethbridge

There is a pretty diverse week of entertainment happening in Lethbridge over Reading Week, but jazz is the order of the week with a plethora of jazz shows going on throughout the city.


The Most Vocal Poets Society James Oldenburg has several gigs this week with Bandemonium. Photo by Richard Amerywill be hosting Calgary poet/ spoken word artist  Kirk Ramdath from 7-10 p.m., Feb. 22 at the Crossings Branch Library. He will be reading from his latest book “Love In A Handful of Dust.”


 For people who like jazz, Edmonton jazz group the AB trio are playing the Slice, Feb. 24, while Bandemonium, featuring guitarist James Oldenburg, plays the Casino on  Feb. 24-25. Bandemonium is also playing the Slice on Thursday night, Feb. 23.
 Also for jazz fans,Tania Gill plays the Slice Feb. 27. There is a $10 cover.
 Last but not least, The Herb Hicks Jazz Quartet are playing the Mocha Cabana, on Feb. 24 and Feb. 25.


For something unusual, former Blue Rodeo keyboardist Bob Wiseman returns to the Slice, Feb. 25.


Big Smoke of ’52 will be playing some rock and roll at the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Feb. 25. And Matt Robinson, who has just released a new CD, plays the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Feb. 24.

 For something a little louder, the Ketamines will be releasing their new LP, Feb. 23 at the Owl Acoustic Lounge. Stressed Out are also on the bill.

 


 And Stuart Maclean’s Vinyl Cafe will be at the Yates Centre for two Feb. 26 shows, a 2:30 p.m. matinee and a 7 p.m. evening show. Bluesman Harry Manx will be among the featured performers for the show featuring the host of the popular CBC radio show.

The big roots show of the week is Steve Coffey who will not only be premiering some of his newest paintings at the Geomatic Attic from 10-4 p.m., Feb. 25, but will be introducing his fifth CD with his band the Lokels  in the evening. Alyssa McQuaid will be opening the show. Tickets are $22.50 for members, $25 for non-members


If you like acoustic folk music on a Sunday, then Royal Canoe returns to Lethbridge with Rococode, Feb. 26.
 There are excellent early week shows as well.
 On Feb. 21, Paul Kype and Texas Flood host the jam at the Slice. But if you like indie-rock, Jess and the Dandelions kick off a ‘spring’ tour at the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Feb. 21, with Calgary’s Peer Support and Shy Tom. There is no cover.
