Usually when you talk about the Saskatoon music scene, people rave about the Deep Dark Woods. The Deep Dark Woods return to Lethbridge, Oct. 26. Photo by Richard Amery
The folk/ roots band have been on the road all over the world since last October, played countless festivals including  the Bonaroo Music Festival, Newport Folk Festival, the End of The Road Festival in England, festivals in Holland and they will be returning to Lethbridge, Oct. 26 to play the Lethbridge College Barn for the Geomatic Attic.

“We’ve been on the road since last October,  it can be very tiring, but it’s what I do and it’s what I want to do. It’s incredible that I can be doing it,”  said lead singer Ryan Boldt.

“But it is always great to come home and play and see shows,” Boldt continued, just returning home after a quick visit to the United States where they were playing a few shows at the Austin City Limits Music Festival featuring Neil Young.
“ It was amazing to watch Neil Young from the side of the stage. It was pretty incredible,” he said.

The Deep Dark Woods have a had a pretty incredible year themselves, winning a Western Canada Music Award for best roots and folk album for their 2011 CD “The Place I Left Behind,” plus nominations for the Americana Music Awards and Canadian Folk Awards. Boldt himself was nominated for  a Canadian Folk Music Award for contemporary album and songwriter of the year but lost out to Dan Managan.

He doesn’t think too much about the accolades.
“You never really think about it when you’re making a record, you just hope people will like it, then we get nominations like this,” he said.

He is just glad to be home briefly.
“There‘s lots of great bands here, Shuyler Jansen is one of Canada’s finest songwriters and Clayton Linthicum of Kacy and Clayton is one if the finest guitar players around, so it’s pretty neat that they are all from Saskatoon,” he enthused.

The Deep Dark Woods aren’t done their year yet though.

“We’re touring until December, then we’ll take a couple months off to  work on new songs and  record a new album in March,” he summarized.

They are excited about coming back to Lethbridge to play for the Geomatic Attic in the Barn.

“We played the Geomatic Attic with Little Miss Higgins. So it’s going to be good to get back to Lethbridge. And my best friend lives in Lethbridge so it will be good to see him again ” he said.

Tickets for the show cost $25.  It is a partnership with the Lethbridge College Student's Association, the show begins at 8 p.m. sharp.
