Coal Creek Boys debut new CD and bassist

E-mail Print PDF

The Coal Creek Boys introduced their new double CD Rose Town ( Whiskey and Wine) as well as their new bassist Shawn Worden, for a decent sized audience at the Slice, May 4.

But first, Devon Coyote shredded on the guitar and probably a few eardrums with a  smoking hot band and some scorchinThe Coal Creek Boys Shawn Worden and Dino Scavo. Photo by Richard Ameryg slide guitar.

He alternated between several different guitars including a 12-string, and sat down to  scrape out a slide solo on another guitar set on his lap. Coyote played his own combination of rocking blues music with just a touch for folk and roots. Though the blues definitely came through.
His band was super tight and really made his music shine during a long set of approximately an hour long. Many of his songs came from his CD  “Blue, Black and Grey.”

“Broken Down Blues ” was one of several highlights of his set.

The Coal Creek Boys busily broke in their new bassist, Shawn  Worden, who sat backed and grooved next to multi-instrumentalist Dino Scavo, who sat down in the shadows, alternating between a variety of instruments.

John Paul Smith was the affable frontman as always, picking country licks and engagingly chatting with the crowd. Drummer Ryan Mildenberger was a manic Devon Coyote tearing it up on slide guitar. They played several of the newer songs including a highlight  “Bad Man” and what is sure to become one of their hits “G.I. Highway,” a mid tempo Steve Earleish rocker from “Whiskey,” the electric CD of the double CD set.

They also played  some of the highlights from their last CD “Hard At It In Old Town,” including  “Mamma Please,” and “ Genie (Lose The Bottle),” before playing some more newer material, then slowing things down a little for a quick acoustic set featuring Kris Hodgson on cello.
