One wouldn't think of Grande Prairie as a hotbed for metal music, however, one metal band has emerged from the frozen north.
Edge of Attack return to Lethbridge, June 1 at the Moose Lodge with local metal band the Avulsion, punk/ garage rock band the Ruby Plumes, Crown Killer and Rattlesnake Shake.
“The lack of a scene here has been an obstacle, but it has given us incentive to play outside of the city,” said lead singer Roxanne Gordey, adding they play around Alberta in Edmonton and Calgary as well as in B.C. and Vancouver.
Edge of Attack have just released their debut CD in February.
“Response has been pretty good. People are finding it had to describe because we don’t fit into any metal sub genre, so we call ourselves modern metal, ” Gordey described.
She noted the band bonded together over their love of metal music, though she grew up listening to classic rock music.
“We all love metal, so it was inevitable that we would end up making music together,” she said adding Freddie Mercury is her favourite singer.
“Jurekk (Whipple, lead guitarist/ vocalist) is the one who got me into metal,” she said.
“ I taught myself though I had some coaching, mostly to learn how not to damage anything. Rhythm guitarist Dallas Dyck, bassist Denver Whipple and drummer Trevor Swain make up the rest of the band which has been together for about three years..
She said Edge of Attack’s lyrics are open to interpretation.
“They are really up to interpretation,” she said.
It took them six months to record their album— and the did it twice.
“The first time we just wanted to get it done, when the opportunity came up to do it again, it was more about polishing and perfect it. Most of them were the same songs, but we added two new songs,” she continued.
She said the Canadian metal scene has improved a lot over the past few years.
“It’s a lot better. there are more metal bands compared to before,” she said adding Kobra and the Lotus are among her favourites as well as Unleash the Archers.
“ There are some similarities. But they play a different style of metal than us. We played with them a couple of times in Vancouver
They are excited about returning to Lethbridge for the first time in about a year.
“ A lot of kids were there and they were really into it. We play a lot different show now. We have the same lineup. But we have a lot more new songs and we’ve been together longer. It’s really high energy live show,” she described.
“ There will be a lot of different genres of metal for those who come to it,” she continued.
“ We hope a lot of the same people who where at the last show will be at this one.”
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with bands beginning at 7 p.m. There is a $10 cover.
