Kitchener based singer/ songwriter Lynn Jackson takes a more personal angle on her sixth CD, “Down In The Dust.”
She will be playing a solo show at the Owl Acoustic Lounge, June 1.
“ I don’t like to write the same album twice,” she said adding she is excited about being on Toronto’s Busted Flat Records alongside luminaries like New Brunswick bluesman Matt Anderson and the Northern Pikes’ Jay Semko.
Her sixth album was a year in the making, it has a slightly different focus than the storytelling based songs of her previous efforts.
“Each album is a reaction to the previous album. I’m a storyteller, but on this album, more of the songs are more personal observations,” she said.
“It’s just a little more of an internal dialogue,” she continued.
There are still storytelling songs like “Missing Sinaloa,” which is about the violence and disappearances associated with the cross border Mexican/ U.S. drug trade in cities like Juarez and El Paso.
“ I’ve been doing a lot of reading about it. ‘Missing Sinaloa’ is about a woman who used to be a beauty queen who was snatched off the street. A lot of innocent people are caught in the middle of it. It’s crazy. I wanted to tell her story. Juarez is one of the most dangerous cities in the world,” she observed.
She is very pleased with the result.
“I think it could be the best I’ve ever written,” she said.
“ It’s getting great reviews across the board,” she continued.
She noted all of the people playing on her CD are close friends.
“Other than a couple of studio musicians, recording this CD was like recording with a bunch of my best friends,” she enthused.
She hasn’t played Lethbridge since 2007 or 2008 but is excited about returning, June 1.
“ I have a lot of new songs and stories, so I’m hoping for a room of people who appreciate listening to music,” she said.
There is no cover for the show, which begins at approximately 9:30 p.m.
