Zombiefest this weekend

August kicks off in high gear this week with several excellent shows happening.
 Rock and roll band the Weber Brothers rock July to a close at the Slice, July 31. They cut their teeth as Ronnie Hawkins’ backing band and have taken off on their own since then.  The next day, Fernie stoke-folk band Shred Kelly returns to rock the roots, also at the Slice. They have had a busy  summer touring festival across Canada and making a new videos. They will be playing with Ottawa’s Loon Choir. There is a $15 cover for the show.


 And, get your zombie/death metal fix at the Moose Hall, Aug. 2-3 as some of Canada’s heaviest bands will be playing. Featured acts include Path To Extinction, Disciples of Power, Putrescence, Begrime Exemious and many more including local band the Avulsion.

   On Friday, the schedule is Psychotic Gardening 10:55-12:00; Autaric 10:05-10:35; Quietus 9:25-9:55; Reverend Kill 8:45-9:15; Path To Extinction 8:10-8:35; Savage Streets 7:35-8:00 andTed Bundy 7:00-7:25.

On Saturday, the schedule is Disciples Of Power 11:10-; Putrescence 10:05-10:50; Death Toll Rising 9:25-9:55; Begrime Exemious 8:45-9:15; Kryosphere 8:10-8:35 ; Psychotik Tantrum 7:35-8:00 andThe Avulsion 7:00-7:25

Daily passes cost $25, or $40 for the weekend.


For the complete opposite of that, classical pianist Jesse Plessis plays a recital at CASA, Aug. 2 at 7 p.m.
 There are also excellent local shows including local electro pop band Stars From Streetlights who play the Owl Acoustic Lounge with Mark Mills, Aug. 2.


 Alyssa McQuaid has a couple of shows this week including Aug. 3 at the Mocha Cabana and Aug. 4 at Moxies. Dale Ketcheson plays the Mocha Cabana, Aug. 2. James Oldenburg and Anna Vanderheide play Ric’s Grill, Aug. 2 while country duo Tom and Curt play the Casino on on Friday and Saturday.


 If you want to rock and roll, Calgary rock trio Flowshine returns to  the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Aug. 3.

However if you like the blues with your rock, Wild T and the Spirit return to the Slice, Aug. 4.


 There is also a big show early next week as Toronto electro-pop trio Dragonette plays Average Joes, Aug. 6 with DJ Fuze.


They are touring in support of their latest CD  “Body Parts” and are known for a variety of hits including “Hello,” “Run, Run Run” “Live In This City”  and “Big in Japan.”
