So You Want to be a Singer? Record yourself

E-mail Print PDF

If you want to get good, and I mean really good, then you have to let your fears and inhibitions go and record your voice.
Daunting yes. Embarrassing, perhaps. But very necessary.

So the next time that you go to sing some of your favorite songs, grab your phone, your laptop or whatever gadgets you have an record your voice.

Listen a few times. Playback is so intimidating, but it allows you to hear your tone, timbre, breathing, pitch, timing, etc. Be critical of yourself but in a constructive and positive manner.

Point out sections in which you like and don't like in the song, so that you can adjust and make the necessary improvements for next time.

Take it one step more, show the video or play the recording for someone who has a musically trained ear for extra advice. A vocal coach like myself, can help you to hone in and capitalize on your vocal strengths and abilities and give you solid advice on what you can do better.
