It is another excellent week for local music.
The big local event of the week is the official CD release party for the Dirti Speshuls’ brand new, huge sounding debut CD “Long Time Coming.”
If you like bands like Queens of the Stone Age and Treble Charger, you will love this long awaited CD from vocalist Todd Carter, drummer Dean Wilson, bassist Rick Beres and guitarists Jon Vornbrock and Rob Cooper, plus John Brooks, who has since moved to Japan.
The CD release party takes place at the Slice, April 25. It is a pay as much as you want for CD and admission. It will begin at approximately 9:30 p.m.
Cosmic Charley and hip hop musician Riko Ra will be performing as well.
Another excellent show at the Slice for progressive rockers features Lustre Creame and Orillia, Ontario progressive rock trio Like Animals, who are touring the country in support of their new EP “ the Wild.”
They play April 23. Tickets cost $8 in advance, $10 at the door.
You can bang your head at the Slice, April 26 with Vancouver based progressive metal band Tribune plus SS Doom, formerly known as Sacred Savage, Trancide and punk duo MK Ultra. There is a $10 cover. Tribune are touring in support of their latest CD “Tales.“
The Owl Acoustic Lounge also has some alternative/ experimental garage rock, April 26 with local garage rock band The Yeah Dads and 12 string guitar powered Calgary psych rock band the Devonian Gardens. It is a fundraiser and attention grabber for the May 10 Electric Eye Music Festival.
If you like country music, Trevor Panczac and Rough Stock are playing the Moose Hall, April 25. You even get fed. There will be a roast beef dinner with all of the trimmings beginning at 6 p.m.. Tickets cost $13. Call 403-329-2767 for details.
For something a little more jazzy, the Lethbridge Community Silver Band will be performing their annual greatest hits concert, April 26 at CASA. Admission is $15. The concert is from 7:30 -9:30 p.m.. VIP tickets cost $25 and students are free.
There is also a big rap show this week at Studio 54 with Vancouver hip hop crew the Swollen Members plus Animal Nation and local rappers Pyke, F-Bomb and DJ Fuze. Advance tickets for the April 29 show at Studio 54 cost $30. The show begins at 9 p.m.
There are also lots of open mics this week, including all of the usuals, plus an open mic at Smokehouse on Saturday, April 26 and a comedy open mic at Jimmy’s with the Drama Nutz, April 26. The Drama Nutz also return with a new murder mystery on Wednesday, April 23, when “Crisis On Excelsior” takes place at Club Didi – 210-517a 4th Ave S. There is a $10 cover.
Early next week, Ottawa Valley folk/ roots musician Brock Zeman returns to the Slice, April 29 to host the Tuesday night open mic and play songs from his new CD.
