Sarah Burton makes her own bed of piano music

Toronto chanteuse Sarah Burton is moving away from her country roots on her new album “Make Your Own Bed.“

She is bringing her brand new band (drummer Scott Nickel and guitarist Alfred Chow from the band Vibonics and Sarah Burton returns to Lethbridge, July 5. Photo by Richard Amerybassist Victoria Beard from Australian blues band Jungal) to the Slice, July 5 to play a gig with Carolyn Mark.

“ It’s brand new,” she said adding things have been going so far so good with the new band.

“ Make Your Own  Bed” is different  than what fans are used to hearing, but is not new to her.

“It’s piano driven. And piano is my first instrument. It’s been labelled adult alternative. Which means music for adults who listen to alternative music who are in their 30s like me. So it’s not quite adult contemporary music and not quite alternative, but it's somewhere in between,” she said.

“ It’s a huge departure for me as far as music I’ve been putting out, but it's something I’ve been working on for a long time,” she continued.

She hopes her fans will like the new music.
“ We spent a lot of time on the arrangements. It‘s all original. I think it's the best thing I’ve ever done,” she said.
“The odd person will be surprised. But whenever there has been a piano I’ve played songs on it. And I’ve been moving away from booking the strictly country gigs,” she said.

“ We’re doing a soft release, selling it off the stage, but the official, record label and iTunes release will be in the Fall,” she said.

She is looking forward to the Lethbridge show, which will be with Carolyn Mark.

“I’ve never played the same bill as her before, though we’ve played the same festivals. She’s a person I really respect. So I am looking forward to that,” Burton said adding it was a happy coincidence  that mark is on the same bill this time.

“ So I’ll be playing all of the new music and if we have time, some songs from my other albums,” she said.
The show begins at  approximately 9 p.m, July 5. There is a $10 cover.
