September is already looking like it will be a lot of fun with several huge events happening this week.
Tonight, Vancouver rock band Lucid Afterlife play the Slice at 8 p.m., Sept. 2.
One big event this week is the ULSU Freshfest which features several events at the university culminating with the Freshfest Jamboree on Sept. 6. While it is only open to University of Lethbridge students or a guest of a student, they have an incredible, not to mention diverse line-up this year.
The big event is the Fresh U Jamboree which runs from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Sept. 6 with a variety of live music beginning with acoustic duo The Acoustic Rhymers Jeff Wood and Aaron Gilbert at 3 p.m. , who will be followed by up and coming local pop and folk star Mike Maguire at 3:45. They pick up the tempo at 4:30 with Delhi 2 Dublin who blend energetic Celtic music with a lot of contemporary pop and dance with East Indian music. Calgary rock band Go For the Eyes follow at 5:30 p.m. Fellow Calgary rockers the Dudes are on at 6:30 p.m. Then things take a turn for the dance with Vancouver alternative pop, R and B, dance and Hip hop combo Dirty Radio at 7:30 p.m. Toronto based electro-pop rock sensation Lights aka Lights Poxleinter is up next at 8:30 p.m. She will release her brand new CD “Little Machines” on Sept. 23. Toronto based hip hop/ electronica trio Keys N Krates finish the show at 9:45. pm. after that.
On the other hand and on the other side of town on the same day at Spitz Stadium, get your classic rock fix with The Lethbridge Music Festival. The day long festival features most of your favourite Canadian classic rock hitmakers. Local acts including Zojo Black begin at noon followed by cover band Topaz at 2 p.m. Prism will “Take You to The Kaptain” as they hit the stage at 3 p.m. to play a variety of hits like “See Forever Eyes,” “Flying” and “Spaceship Superstar.” After that, Harlequin will give you that “Superstitious Feeling” as they’ll be “Thinking Of You” at 5 p.m. Honeymoon Suite hopes you will “Feel It Again” while thinking of “Wave Babies” and maybe find a “New Girl Now” at 7 p.m. The headliner, Lou Gramm of Foreigner will be playing all of Foreigner’s hits from the ’70s and ’80s like “Urgent” “Head Games” “I Want to Know What Love Is” and “Double Vision” at 9 p.m. Tickets for the festival cost $65 at the gate.
The other big event goes hand in hand with the Tour of Alberta cycling tour. Several local acts will be performing at the Enmax Centre, Sept. 3 including Kavanagh & Hepher who begin the show at 11:30 a.m., Tangible Radiance at 12:15 p.m., Steve Foord at 1 p.m., Young Medicine at 1:45 p.m., the Lethbridge Community Taiko Association at 2:30 p.m. LCTA Urban Beat Dance Studio at 3:145p.m., Johnny G & The Spots at 3:45 p.m., Coal Creek Boys at 4:30 p.m., New Weather Machine at 5:15 p.m. and Hippodrome ending the day at 6 p.m.. The festival begins at 11 a.m. at the Enmax Centre. The race begins at 3:10 p.m.
There are several other shows this week including a weird one at the Fish and Games Club (9th Avenue & 10th Street South) featuring OCD Peace Country Diaspora, Calgary rock band DRI Hieve, Edmonton Blasphemy pop group the Postnamers, Bobby Hoffstrom and Edmonton's the Royal Iguana Fur. The show begins at 9 p.m.
Dale Ketcheson kicks off September at the Mocha Cabana on Sept. 5 and 6. And for experimental folk rock, Yes We Mystic return to Lethbridge to play the Slice on Sept. 3.
The Owl Acoustic Lounge welcomes Toronto based acoustic bluesman Doc MacLean back to lethbridge on Friday, Sept.5. The Owl Also features Calgary based folk singer Amy Thiessen on Wednesday and Local country band Rancho Deluxe on Sept. 6.
It is also a great week to laugh with the Fire Under Your Ass comedy show, Sept. 2 at Inferno. This will be a regular event featuring bigger name comedian. This week, Kris Labelle and Dag Austin will be performing at 9 p.m. There is a $12 cover though Inferno will be offering promo codes and discounts on their Facebook page. Kris Labelle is considered the Joe Rogan of Canada who has been on the Score, TSN, the Fight Network and Superchannel. He is a master of storytelling and impressions and has been a MMA commentator. Dag Austin is an Los Angeles based comedian who has been on MTV.
And Yuk Yuks Comedy returns to Average Joes his week with Lori Ferguson-Ford, Ian Wallace and Randy Webb performing on Sept. 5. There is a $10 cover for that show.
