Shred Kelly and Rougies Clique get Frostbite at the U of L

I didn’t get to many shows this week, but didn’t want to miss Fernie based stoke folk band Shred Kelly at the University of Lethbridge Zoo for FrShred Kelly’s Tim Newton and Sage McBride at Frostbite. Photo by Richard Ameryostbite, Jan. 17.

It meant I had to wait for  University of Lethbridge born, Calgary based rap collective Rougies Clique who stormed the stage with ear shattering, thudding rhythm and rapid fire lyrical flow from the four different members backed by their DJ.

I couldn’t hear any of their lyrics, though could make out a few phrases like  “bitches on my hip like a clique” and something about marijuana and lots of “don’t mess with the Rougies Clique.”

I was there for Shred Kelly as we most of the good sized crowd, clustered near the front to the stage.

They played plenty of old  favourites and  six songs from their brand new CD “Sing To The Night,” including “ Family Oh Family,” Going Sideways,” and the title track.

They always provide a lot of toe tapping fun, endless energy, vocal harmonies and plenty of wicked banjo playing and had all of that and more.

Keyboardist Sage McBride pretty much equally shared lead vocals with grinning banjo player Tim Newton.

The crowd called out for  their favourite “ I Hate Work,” but Shred Kelly saved that for end, combining it with Loverboy’s ’80s hit  “Working for the Weekend.”
They will be back in Lethbridge to play a wicked double bill at the Slice, Feb. 6 with Calgary rock band Cowpuncher. Tickets for that show cost $25.
