It is always a good time when Winnipeg surf punk trio the Thrashers come to town as it was, March 30 at the Owl Acoustic Lounge.
Local trio the Ruby Plumes covered a lot of ground in their brief set which included all of the songs from their new EP “Happy Home” which branched out from their usual brand of garage rock/ early punk.
Bassist Ethan Ganske sang most of the lead vocals for the set, though guitarist J
ackson Tiefenbach sang a few of the songs.
Ganske played some excellent experimental bass while Tiefenbach incorporated a few more effects into his set. Drummer Daniel Moxon held everything together.
They played music from all of their recordings and ended with a cover of Iggy and the Stooges “1969.”
The Thrashers also covered music from throughout their repertoire, though focused on their new CD “ Robot Invaders From The Death Galaxy.”
So there was plenty of kinetic energy and adenoidal vocals along the lines of the Dead Kennedys and the Dickies as bassist Sean G and Guitarist Jesse Bercier took turns singing lead vocals.
They played a couple of instrumentals from the new CD, which had a Shadowy Men From A Shadowy Planet feel.
Sean G joked people should buy merch so the band could make a video featuring “Luke Wilson making out with Owen Wilson,” and tore into one of the new CD’s highlights “Party on the Moon.”
They stayed in the party vein by digging into their back catalogue for “Dance Party” and played some brand new material as well.
“ Small Talk” was a highlight.
They wound down their set with the title track from the new album and crowd favourite “ Shark Attack” and officially ended the set with the new song, the punkish “ Dynamite” from the new album before calling it a night just after 11:30 p.m.
