There were 30 some people at Slice enjoying a whole lot of boogie woogie and New Orleans jazz from the Edmonton based Rooster Davis band, June 25.
Ann Vriend sang beautifully with her inimitably soulful squeal as always while rattling her tambourine. Rooster Davis played toe tapping riffs on the piano and added harmonies.
There were drum solos and lots of well placed trombone solos from Brad Shigeta. They ended with a very cool cool version of Iko Iko which was apt for a sweltering night.
The second set featured more piano and Dixieland New Orleans trombone and several songs from the band’s new CD “For Saints and Sinners.”
While Ann Vriend sang several songs, she stepped back and let rooster take the lead on a great version of blues classic St. James Infirmary which tarted slowly as he couldn't remember the words to start.
Vriend rejoined them for an excellent version of another blues and gospel classic “Down by The Riverside.”
They branched out a little more in the second set by adding some Ray Charles and a few other revamped covers.
