Vancouver based band Olenka and the Autumn Lovers, who started around the classical guitar of front-woman Olenka Krakus will introduce a more indie-rock sound when they return to the Slice, July 25.
“There’s a lot of very long drives,” said Olenka Krakus, who relocated w
ith her partner, drummer Jeffrey Moon to Vancouver from Southern Ontario approximately a year and a half ago.
“ Even the drive from Vancouver to Fernie is 13 and a half hours,” Krakus said.
“ Some of these drives are imaginable. Canadian musicians are amazing to do that. In the United States, the drives aren’t usually as long,” she said.
They will be ending their tour in Lethbridge.
“We’re going to places we haven’t seen in a while like Saskatoon. So we’re excited about getting to meet people we haven’t seen in the flesh for four or five years,” she said.
The last time they played Lethbridge, they got caught in the surprise closure of the Tongue N Groove, so a several bands including Olenka and The Autumn Lovers, had to find other gigs in Lethbridge.
“Luckily Jesse and Tyler from the Slice were able to help us. So we’re happy to be playing there again,” she said.
She will be joined by guitarist Daniel Toews, bassist Christopher Ellis and reeds player Ridley Bishop.
“Jeffrey is staying in London to visit friends and family, so he won’t be in Lethbridge with us. But we’re all multi-instrumentalists, so we do a lot of switching around on stage and Ridley is an amazing reeds player,” she said.
She is enjoying living in Vancouver.
“ We’re playing a lot and we’ve started writing and recording” she said.
They are touring in support of their new seven inch single “ It‘s All Right” and planning on recording a full length CD.
“The last time we were there, I had my strings players. So the sound of the band was different, especially with strings players. It was a mix of folk, pop, rock and country music. This is more of an aggressive, indie rock sound than it was before,” she said.
“But the sound is still very full. It will be eclectic,” she said.
“It will be a lovely show. It will be a lot of fun and the cast will show off their talent,” she said.
There is a $10 cover for the show, which is scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m., July 25.
