There are starting to be a lot of good shows on Sunday nights. Luckily people come out for them.
So I was pleased to catch a set from Montreal punks the Boids at Inferno, Nov. 1.
I missed Penitentz’ opening set, but arrived in time for an upbeat set of pop punk mixed with hard core from the Boids, who are touring in support of their new CD “Superbafrango.”
So as expected they played most of their new work with a few highlights of last year’s album “ We Stalk Each Other Like Animals.”
They opened with the new track “Mole People,” about Montreal transit police then jumped into “ F--k Your Macho Bulls--t.”
They changed gears into a more funk flavoured realm as the long, lean, lanky bassist / vocalist hunched over the microphone shouting out vocals.
They sounded like a blend of Blink -182 and NoMeansNo with a touch of the Supersuckers with the two guitarists jumping around on both sides of the stage.
They switched gears again into a heavier, more feedback drenched number called “Don’t Need your TV.”
The band explored their more humourous, pop side on an exuberant cover of the Silhouettes’ “Get A Job,” complete with rousing na na na na, na na na na na na background vocals.
They wound down their set with “Back In My Arms,” from their last album and “ Human Bomb,” from the new one followed by a “brand new song.”
A lot of the audience wanted to see folk punk Jesse Stewart and gathered around the stage as he strummed his mandolin before asking them if it was all right if her had a smoke first. The crowd gleefully joined him outside Inferno.
